One brewing problem they are fixing is that accumulated carbon dioxide usually needs to be released in the process, which could endanger a spacecraft. Instead they plan on combining the fermentation and carbonation stages rather than separating them. “Our canister is designed based on actual fermenters,” said Srivaths Kaylan, the team’s mechanical leader.
“It contains three compartments, the top will be filled with unfermented beer, and the second will contain the yeast.”
He continues explaining, “When the rover lands on the Moon with our experiment, a valve will open between the two compartments, allowing the two to mix.”
Once the yeast does its thing a second valve will open and let it sink to separate from the now fermented beer.
