Slang-wise, shellac means to “destroy.” In food mass production, it’s an ingredient in candy. Sometimes listed on an ingredients label as “confectioner’s glaze,” it’s not sugar. So there’s this insect found in Thailand called the lac bug. Females of the species build tiny tunnels as they move through tree branches, which are carved out via a powerful, shiny excretion. That’s what shellac is, and it’s scraped off of trees and put on jelly beans to make them so shiny.
