I know I’m bitching a fair amount, but there is one more con of note, as viewed by this American. You notice those mouth guards East Asian cultures tend to wear both on their bikes and while they’re in any public place? Well, there are multiple, equally disturbing, reasons for that.
First off, air pollution and smog are often relatively high. In addition, the poorly built roads tend to kick up a lot of dust that hit you like a sandy brick while driving.
Secondly, the overall hygiene and sanitation is lacking, to put it mildly. I noticed immediately that Vietnamese people tend to give zero fucks about manners which pertain to clearing your throat, or sinuses, in a way that protects others from the spread of aerial germs & bacteria. In a nutshell, people cough, sneeze, and hack up a lung without ever covering their mouth. Numerous times I felt the wind of some stranger’s cough hit me right on the back of the neck. It’s cozy if you’re into awful sensations.
Lastly, because of the excessive trash piles, sometimes it’s just convenient to have a buffer to keep the odor at bay. I know, right, what a pompous, elitist, American I must sound like right now. But I told you you’d get the truth, and nothing but it.
