Exorcist: The Beginning
In case you didn’t see it, The Beginning tells the story before The Exorcist, specifically Father Merrin’s first encounter with demon Pazuzu. The first version of the film was directed by Paul Schrader, who left out the gore and jump scares and opted for a much slower psychological thriller.
The producers clearly didn’t get it and were shocked by the lack of jumps and scares and blood. After deliberation over adding more scenes to make it creepier, they decided to instead fire Schrader altogether and hired Renny Harlin to create an entirely new movie. Stellan Skarsgard stayed on as lead actor, but other than that the two movies are completely different.
The Harlin version was poorly reviewed and flopped instantly, which led to Warner Bros. letting Schrader release his version on DVD to get a little money back on it. The reviews were slightly better, but still didn’t really cut it.
