About that same time, Konrad suffered from a brain aneurysm that needed immediate and drastic attention. He was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center to begin treatment. Unfortunately, after a long fight, Konrad’s brain suffered irreparable damage and he was declared brain dead. But by some small miracle, his organs had continued to work and thus they were able to be donated.
Shortly after Reuland passed away, Carew received his new heart and kidney. After connecting the dots, the families had an inkling that the organs of Konrad could be the ones that saved the life of Carew. So they called the donation company and they were right.
