The ‘My Way’ Karaoke Rage Killings
If you’ve been to a Karaoke bar, you know that for everyone that nails a song, there’s at least 35 that murder a song into oblivion. In the Philippines, however, murdering a song, might get you murdered yourself.
It’s a common practice in the Philippines, as well as southeast Asia, to kick back at a Karaoke bar and sing some beloved tunes, and chances are, someone’s gonna put on Ol’ Blue Eyes and My Way is going to be attempted. This was the norm, supposedly, until the ‘My Way Killings’ began.
According to rumours, myths and whispered secrets, at least 6 people were murdered during, or as a result of, singing My Way. The killers supposedly took out the victims in order to prevent any future out-of-tune renditions of the classic, which led to the song being banned all across the country. The phenomenon was blamed on the violent drinking culture of the country, the puritanical nature of people who revere the song and, as well, the arrogance contained within the lyrics themselves.
Is it true? Maybe. There have been documented cases of Karaoke Rage all over Asia, so whether or not this song is the trigger, or a symptom of a bigger phenomenon, we don’t really know.
Maybe pick your drinks and songs wisely next time you hit up a Karaoke bar.
