This is Frane Selak. Born in 1929 in Croatia, he was a regular guy who lived a relatively normal, quiet life, working as a music teacher. Then, in his thirties, he accidentally took up the hobby of cheating death. Time and time again, and always involving some kind of vehicle, Selak found himself in a horrible accident…and every time he suffered basically no physical ramifications.
1962: Selak is on a train from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik. Usually a routine five-hour trip across the former Yugoslavia, the train derailed while on an icy bridge. The train plunged into the freezing river below. Seventeen people died in the accident. Frane Selak climbed his way to safety, and walked away with just a broken arm and a few bruises and cuts.
1963: On a flight from Zagreb to Rijeka, a door broke off from the plane and flew away, mid-air. It also sucked a couple dozen people out into the air, including Frane Selak. Nineteen people died, but not Selak. He plummeted to the ground, but somehow landed on top of a haystack. He was totally fine.
1966: This time Frane Selak was on a bus that accidentally crashed into a river. Four people drowed that day, but Selak was unharmed.
1970: Frane Selak realized there was something wrong with his car’s fuel pump when his car started to ignite. Selak escaped right before his car before became a giant ball of fire.
1973: Frane Selak got another car, and this one also caught fire. This time, flames shot through the air vents and singed off most of his hair. But no other harm done.
1995: Dude managed to get himself hit by a city bus. He got checked out by a doctor, and he only had minor injuries.
1996: Frane Selak was driving on a narrow mountain road and was headed straight for a collision with a truck coming right at him. Thinking fast but not wisely, he sweved, drove off a cliff, and jumped out and grabbed a branch. As he climbed his way back up to the road, he looked down and saw his car explode 300 feet or so beneath him.
2003: Frane Selak wins the equivalent of $1.1 million in the Croatian national lottery. He bought two houses and a boat (the one method of transportation that hadn’t almost gotten him killed).
2010: Frane gives away the rest of his winnings to friends and relatives.
