In case you’re a little rusty on your Roman history, in 79 CE, the Roman city of Pompeii was obliterated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, burying the city and choking 11,000 people to death. In the 1700’s, the city was rediscovered and slowly uncovered. What makes Pompeii unique is that, as they encountered a void in the ash, where someone had been buried, they filled the space with plaster to get an accurate depiction of what people looked like as they died.
