Norm Macdonald. A week after he was fired from Saturday Night Live in 1998 (reportedly because of his relentless jokes on “Weekend Update” about O.J. Simpson, a friend of NBC vice president Don Ohlymeyer), Macdonald got a call from a The Late Show with David Letterman producer, asking if he’s like to film some “man on the street” bits. He said he would, but a few days later the producer called him to tell him that he hadn’t gotten the job, and also that the job was actually to be the host of a new talk show that would air after The Late Show. Macdonald was Letterman’s preference, but network executives overruled him and gave The Late, Late Show to then-Daily Show anchor Craig Kilborn.
