The Zodiac Killer
Possibly the most prominent serial killer of all time, the Zodiac committed murders in Northern California in the late 60s and early 70s. Although only 5 deaths and 2 injuries are confirmed, the number could be as high as 37.
The Zodiac Killer originated his own name in a series of letters sent to the press, taunting police and creating public fear. Included in these letters were four cryptograms, only one of which has been deciphered. His final letter, postmarked January 29, 1974, concluded with “Me = 37, SFPD = 0”.
No conclusive evidence was ever brought forward and the San Francisco Police Department closed the case in April 2004 before reopening it in March 2007.
