We’re Becoming Less Literary Because of the Internet.
On the web, there are billions upon billions of pages of content, and most internet users think that they’re reading more written information than ever before. How much of that, however, is long form content? How many people can say that they curl up with a good book more often than not (and yes, ebooks count as a book.)
It’s scary, but our “literary culture” is under threat. Kids in school aren’t capable of reading and retaining longer books.
Perhaps, as machines and the digital world take over, we’ll revert back to the dark ages, where books were locked up for a select few to read.
