Don Gomez was only a junior soldier when he was deployed to Iraq during the initial invasion in 2003. In a single moment, his entire world changed. He was in a place he didn’t know where they spoke a language he didn’t understand. He assumed that his mission would be concise, that ideally we would win the war and he would come home. What he soon found was that he and his comrades were tasked with staying for an indefinite period of time- something no one was prepared for, least of all him.
