Back in June of 1944, allied forces had some pretty big plans. Operation Overlord, the invasion of France, which in pop culture is still remembered by the name D-Day, was the largest beach invasion in the history of mankind. So it is not too surprising that an event of that magnitude would completely overshadow the capture of Rome, which occurred the day before in Italy.
As a result, the prestige of capturing Rome has since become more of a blunder, as focusing on the capture of the city allowed a large Italian army to escape and continue the fighting in Italy for months.
