Back in 1948 a bodybuilding competition was created to crown the a “Mr. Universe”. The down-side was simple. Due to its connection with the Olympic Games, the contestants were all amateurs which meant that there was no prize money paid out to the winner.
Realizing the need for a monetary incentive, in 1965 a man named Joe Weider stepped in to change the bodybuilding world. Joe Weider’s “Olympia Fitness & Performance Weekend” was created to give bodybuilders an annual competition for “Mr. Universe” contestants to make some money. The winner of the competition would be crowned “Mr. Olympia” which is now considered to be the world’s top professional bodybuilder.
