Meet Helen. Helen has set out on a journey to raise $36,000 for her husband (Peter) to help with a surgery he desperately needs. While her motives for doing this are admirable, the way she had decided to raise funds is… interesting. Helen has promised that if she hits her goal, she’ll change her name to ‘Hillary Clinton’ or ‘Donald Trump’, depending on who wins the US election.
Back in 2013, Peter was diagnosed with IPF – Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a terminal lung disease for which there is no known cause and, worse still, no cure. He was given a life expectancy of 3-5 years. The only way to help him live longer is by receiving a double lung transplant.
The transplant and after care will be extremely expensive, so Helen has set up a Crowd funding page to raise the £30,000 ($36,800) they’ll need. If they hit their target, whoever becomes president will share their name with Helen.
Helen has explained her reasoning behind this:
“If he could run a marathon or skydive from a plane to gather sponsorship, he would. He’s an immensely proud man which is why asking for any help is so difficult. So when our nephew came up with the idea to change my name based on the outcome of the Presidential Election, I knew it would appeal to Peter’s sense of humour, just one of the things I love most about him. I’m still coming to terms with the fact I could soon be called Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump if we reach our target, but I guess it’s a small price to pay to give Peter one last chance.”
