People often knock memes for being crude, crass, and unsophisticated — and frankly, they’ve got a point. But as it turns out memes can deliver a fun and irreverent message with all the pomp and circumstance of a refined art piece you’d find at any museum. Brooklyn-based illustrator Lauren Kaelin has been transforming popular memes found on the internet into minimalist oil paintings since 2013, in a series she has since come to call Benjameme.
