Venom has long been a favorite villain in the Spiderman universe, and Sony announced the character will have a standalone movie premiering on October 5, 2018. Here’s everything we know so far.
‘Venom’ will be an R-rated sci-fi horror movie
The story of Venom revolves around Eddie Brock, a journalist who is exposed to a sticky black alien symbiote that fuses with his body. The symbiote turns Brock into a vicious monster, and there’s a constant back-and-forth between the kind-hearted Eddie and the evil embedded inside of him (think Gollum from Lord of the Rings, where the sweet and innocent Smeagol pleads with his dark side not to do bad things during creepy conversations with himself). Venom is a character perfect for a gritty and scary movie adaptation, and it looks like Sony will at least attempt to deliver.
Eddie Brock will be played by Zac Efron
In news that may dash your hopes of Venom being a legitimately scary horror movie, Zac Efron spilled the beans on Twitter that he was preparing to play Eddie Brock. But I wouldn’t completely write off Efron’s ability to execute the role. He’s got decent chops, he looks like a comic book character, and the voice of Venom will likely be CGId a ton.
The movie will not be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
“Venom” will be independent of the MCU, meaning no run ins with the Avengers — not even Spiderman, the hero he usually squares off against. This could make for a refreshing change of pace from the standard superhero flick, which are full of so many heroes on screen at once that the formula is starting to lose its luster. The tone of “Venom” will likely be much darker.
Venom has yet to have a respectable big screen adaptation
Surprisingly, Venom has only made one other big screen appearance. He was one of three villains crammed into 2007’s Spiderman 3 and was played by the woefully miscast Topher Grace. Things can only get better.
