After watching ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ over the weekend (a highly enjoyable experience BTW) it got me to thinking about the legacy iconic Marvel comic book writer/creator Stan Lee has carved out for himself over the years. Likely, you’re more than aware how he has made himself a constant Easter Egg in each of his Marvel movies, popping up in random places as small and seemingly insignificant characters, however, there is a charm to each and every single appearance.
Below, from his earliest cameo, to ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, you can review every single awesome & campy cameo!!
We love you, Stan!!
Interestingly, Stan Lee’s first live-action cameo was as a jury member for the TV movie “The Trial of the Incredible Hulk.” (1989).
His first cinematic Marvel cameo cameo came as a hot dog vendor in “X-Men” after the newly mutated senator walked out of the water (2000).
He was a surprised bystander who saved a young girl from debris brought about by the Green Goblin in “Spider-Man” (2002).
This time a young Matt Murdock saves a distracted Lee from walking into traffic in “Daredevil” (2003).
Lee and former Hulk actor Lou Ferrigno were two oddly paired security guards in 2003’s “Hulk.” This was his first speaking cameo.
He rescues a woman from rubble while Spider-Man fights with Doc Ock in “Spider-Man 2” (2004).
In “Fantastic Four” (2005), Lee appeared as mailman Willie Lumpkin, which is a character Stan created in the comics.
Lee gets experiences a strange phenomenon when Jean Grey begins using her telekinesis in “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006).
Lee is an uninvited guest in 2007’s “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” who is turned away at the entrance.
He spots Peter Parker in Times Square in 2007’s “Spider-Man 3.” Now if he could just make that movie vanish from existence for good.
Tony Stark mistakes Lee for Hugh Hefner in 2008’s “Iron Man.” It’s not too big a stretch really.
Grab’s a drink in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” infused with Bruce Banner’s blood. It didn’t go over well as you might imagine.
In a homage to his original “Iron Man” cameo, Tony once again mistakes Lee for another celebrity, this time as Larry King in “Iron Man 2” (2010).
Lee tries, and fails, to drag Thor’s hammer with his pickup truck in the first “Thor” (2011).
In “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Lee cameos as a WWII general at a press conference for Cap. (2011)
Lee is interviewed for a newsreel snippet as a chess player in the first “Avengers” movie (2012).
Lee’s actually had a second cameo in the first “Avengers” movie that was cut for time, but in the deleted scenes he’s having lunch nearby to Captain America and urges him to get the waitress’ number. I can imagine how this would’ve been completely unnecessary and slowed the film’s pacing down too much.
Lee jams to some classical music while Spider-Man and the Lizard duel behind him in “The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012).
Lee gives a perfect score to a beauty contestant in “Iron Man 3” (2013).
He appears as a patient stuck in a mental institution in 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World.”
Lee is a security guard who loses Captain America’s costume after the Cap stole it in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014).
Lee attends Peter’s graduation during 2014’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”
Every the ladies man, Rocket Raccoon spies on him in 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” as he flirts with a much younger woman.
Stan made his first animated cinematic cameo in 2014’s “Big Hero 6” as Fred’s father. Such a smooth look.
Stan also made some appearances for Marvel television tie-ins such as being a stranger on a train in an episode of ABC’s show “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (2014)
He then appeared in the first season of ABC’s “Agent Carter,” alongside Tony’s dad, Howard Stark in 2015.
Lee is a drunken military vet in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015) who must be carried away after getting too drunk on Asgardian liquor at a victory party.
This time on the other side of the bar, he’s a friendly bartender in “Ant-Man” (2015).
Stan Lee’s “Deadpool” (2016) cameo is fittingly raunchy as he appears as an emcee at a strip club.
In “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), Lee shows up in one of the last scenes as a Fed-Ex deliveryman, with a package for Tony Stark.
In “X-Men: Apocalypse” (2016), he stands with his real wife Joan (who recently passed away — RIP) during a scene where Apocalypse uses his powers to launch all the world’s nuclear arsenal into space.
He appears very subtly in the final episode of the first season of Netflix’s “Daredevil” series in a photograph on the back wall (2015).
The same photo is seen when Jessica Jones visits the station in “Jessica Jones” (2015), with a surprise appearance from nemesis Kilgrave.
In yet another highly hidden cameo, in Netflix’s series “Luke Cage,” you can spot Stan Lee on a poster saying, “See a crime? Report it!” when Luke spots a robbery in progress.
In “Doctor Strange,” Stan Lee rides a bus in New York City reading a copy of “The Doors of Perception,” oblivious to the battle between Doctor Strange, Mordo, and Kaecilius.
A cameo of Stan in the more serious toned “Logan,” was not in the cards, however, with a little “Deadpool” teaser that aired before the movie played, Stan got his cameo in there. Sadly, the appearance was cut, but still exists online in an extended cut.
Once again, Lee’s face graces a poster in the 13th episode of “Iron Fist.”
Stan’s cameo in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” has him dressed as an astronaut as he sits and tells stories to three alien beings.
You’ll see Lee once again in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” yelling out a window at Spidey who is creating an unnecessary ruckus down below.
