Steve the Knightscope K5 security robot was designed to help provide a secure environment, to keep people safe. There seems to be one major flaw in Steve’s programming, however – was he programmed to keep himself safe from the cruel world as we know it? Sadly, he was not. Less than 24 hours ago, Steve saw the world for what it was and ended his far-too-short life via public fountain.
It was either that, or Steve wasn’t programmed to detect water that’s directly in front of him. While Twitter has decided against the latter, Steve’s maker Knightscope seems to think it was a fluke. “This is an isolated event. The incident is under investigation. No people were harmed or involved in any way. A new robot will be delivered this week at no cost to the Harbour per our service agreement.”
Instead of celebrating the fact that Skynet becoming aware is now about as intimidating as a (sad) basket of kittens, Twitter focused on the loss of a fallen comrade.
