When I think of taking the transit in Japan, especially in Tokyo, I picture crowded train cars and those uniformed guys who’s job it is to push as many people in, as possible. I mean, most subways are like that, but due to the population density of a city like Tokyo, it seems worse there. It got pretty bad during the industrial times of the 80’s and 90’s, when the population grew and the transit system started to get overloaded and unpleasant to ride. Issues were so prevalent, that they began issuing these posters to remind commuters of their manners on the subway.
Some of them are purely taken from Japanese culture and are already pretty strange to us, but others seem to stem from a fascination with American pop culture, and they make the posters bizarre, confusing and ultimately pretty hilarious.
Like this man-spreading alien, reminding you to give people space.
