Writers Adam McKay (who also directed) and Will Ferrell teamed up to write a screenplay when both were working at Saturday Night Live. They wrote a zany script about car salesmen called August Blowout. Paul Thomas Anderson, writer/director of Boogie Nights read it, and while he thought it was too wacky to get made, told them he’d help them get the duo’s next movie made. So they wrote the first draft of Anchorman.
