Meet 25-year-old Mikey Elkins, a PE teacher from Jacksonville, North Carolina. His co-workers introduced him to HQ Trivia, a live trivia game you play on your phone. Until Sunday, Elkins had not won a single penny from playing the game.
“Every day at 3 p.m. me and my coworkers play,” he said. “I never win anything… I never get past question six.”
Sunday night when Elkins was sitting in the bathroom “doing his business” when the notification popped-up to play for $25,000. He was surprised when he quickly made it to question 14. He had been in the bathroom so long his wife knocked on the door to check on him. “You won’t believe it!” Elkin screamed to his wife. “There are nine people left [in the game]!”
Still sitting on the toilet, Elkins’ wife came into the bathroom to finish playing the game with him. He was finally the last player in the game and won the $25,000 jackpot. Normally the jackpot is split between a group of winners but HQ had special rules for Sunday’s game.
Elkins told Buzzfeed he actually knew the answers to a few questions but guessed on the rest. “For questions I didn’t know I went with my first instinct,” he said.
Elkins said because he is a teacher and doesn’t get paid during the summer he will use the winnings to help get through the summer. He also mentioned that he and his wife are foster parents and weren’t able to go on a honeymoon. The couple will use some of the winnings towards a proper trip.
