Next week is the 4th of July and while everyone is making plans to celebrate this patriotic holiday, let’s remember those that served and fought for our freedom with a RAKit week for Veterans.

Here’s a couple ideas for RAKit week…
1. Pick-up the meal/drink bill.
We’ve all been out at a restaurant and thought, “it’d be nice to pay for their meal.” Do it. Tell the waiter/waitress that you’d like, “that table’s bill to be added to your bill.” Simple as it gets.
2. Here’s an easy ice-breaker to start a conversation.
If you have a family member or buddy that is currently Serving (or a Vet), introduce yourself and begin by telling them, “my brother’s with an Artillery Brigade out of Fort Bragg, I just wanted to shake your hand.” It doesn’t matter if you know the exact Battalion/Regiment. By letting them in on your family, they know that you have a little understanding of hardships during deployment…and let the convo begin.
4. Next time that you’re at the gas station, buy 5 scratch-off Lottery Tickets.
Just keep them in your wallet and if you see someone that Serves, simply hand them a scratch-off and say “thanks for Serving.”
3. Do you know of a spouse with a deployed loved one?
Get them a nice $25-50 gift certificate. When you hand it to ‘em, just tell them that they “deserve it.”
5. Take down some UV Vodka
Some of us drink beer, some whiskey but everyone’s got a little liquor cabinet for when people come over. Vets have one too…and they’re going to need a bottle of Vodka for that collection. Get them a clear drink that’s not from Russia, get ‘em a bottle that actually employs those who’ve Served. Kick around purchasing a bottle of UV Vodka, or two.

6. If you’ve got a little time that you’ve thought about donating for a good cause, this one’s going to leave you feeling good.
You can drive wounded Veterans to their VA Hospital appointments. A charity called “DAV” will provide a van and you do a little driving. I’m guessing that you’re going to get to know an incredible human while making the needed transit.

7. Yard work.
Whether you’re helping an elder Vet or just offering to help a younger Vet, it’s the perfect way to shoot the sh*t out in the sun and get a chance to meet them.
8. Looking to get a new lap-top?
That old one may not have all the tech bells-and-whistles but that’s ok, a Vet may just need the basic computer functions. But wait, it’s even better because a charity program through Soldiers’ Angels called “Valor-IT” will actually up-grade your old lap-top’s software before handing it off to a wounded Vet. 9. Power of a handwritten note.
Not typed, nope…just a pen to paper letter to a deployed Service member. Check-out the Soldiers’ Angels Letter Writing Team (LWT). You can write a single letter per month or more if it turns out to work for you.

10. See that guy in uniform at the airport?
Just walk up to them and say the following: “Sorry to bother you, I just wanted to say thank you.” It’ll probably catch ‘em off-guard and may not lead to conversation but trust me, when you walk away, that simple phrase will leave them with an unexpected smile.
11. Speaking of airports, you can donate some of those built-up miles through a program called “Hero Miles.” Check it out HERE.
12. Simply understand the difference between Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day.
It sounds trivial but for those who Serve, the later of the two (Memorial) can have a lot of meaning.
13. Who’s taking care of their pets during deployment or worse, if a Service member is wounded?
Yes, it falls on the loved ones but you can give them a little time-off by volunteering with or donating to the “Pet Foster Home.” Check it out HERE.
14. Why sell your car when you can get a large tax deduction and donate it directly to a Vet in need.
Uncle Sam’s going to get your tax dollars…may as well give your assets to someone that actually deserves it.

15. That leaves us with the good ol’ question,
“who needs a drink?”
Yep, there ain’t no better way to get to know a person than the drink at a bar.
We’ve all got stories to tell…maybe that Vet’s got an actual “Story to Tell.”
