The French authorities are currently conducting a nationwide manhunt for notorious gangster Rédoine Faïd after he broke out of prison using a helicopter this Sunday. This is not Faïd’s first successful escape; in 2013 he blew his way to freedom using explosives hidden in a pack of tissues. He was apprehended 6 weeks later.
At the time of Sunday’s escape, Rédoine had been being visited by his brother when a helicopter carrying several armed men landed in the prison grounds, in an unnetted compound usually used by prisoners about to be released. The men then preceded to use smoke bombs and an angle grinder to gain access to Rédoine, with the unarmed prison guards unable (and understandably unwilling) to stand in their way. The whole escape took just 10 minutes, the burnt out helicopter found another 40 minutes later, burnt out next to a highway.
