Movies are fucking expensive to make. Between paying all of the talent, you’ve got to cover the behind the scenes costs, the locations, the marketing and the licenses. While it seems like some studios just churn out movies like it’s nothing, it’s actually far more perilous than that. A movie has to do more than make back it’s budget, it needs to surpass it.
What complicates things is that only the domestic money matters. Your film can kick ass globally, but if it’s not dominating the US market, then it’s a failure. And if you fail, you lose more than just money. You can lose your entire studio.
