Generally, when I see a film that’s “based on a true story,” I take that with a grain of salt. Generally, it’s a tool to make the audience more invested in the film, and to perhaps make the movie more sentimental, inspirational or just plain entertaining. And you know what, sometimes it works.
But not every true to life film is a happy “Rags to riches” story. Sometimes, you’ll find that a movie that chilled you to your core and left with sleepless, was also based on real events. They won’t always say it within the context of the film, but if you look into it afterwards, you might learn some things you never wanted to. This list here, isn’t exhaustive, and I’ve left off films that are obviously based on true events (Schindler’s List, Auschwitz, Monster, etc..) in favour of films that you wouldn’t nevessarily think were true.
Based on this, we’re a little fucked up.
