First things first: This whole gallery is built around the Billboard Hot 100, which has been around since 1958 and keeps track of music sales in America. Specifically, the Hot 100 is for singles off of an album, not the album itself.
That distinction is important, because it turns out that no matter how many albums you sell, getting a number one single is much harder than you’d think. Because these musicians and bands are NOT minor players, and damn near all of these are truly shocking.
