There are a lot of things that a horror film needs to do, for it to be worth my time. For example, I like believability. If I feel like those things are realistic, and plausible, then I get creeped out. It’s why I love films like The Shining & Halloween, because they’re people focused, with a creepy and supernatural element. But there is a fine line between aiming for realism and taking things too far.
For example, the films below have all been put through the wringer for various crimes like moral indecency, obscenity, child murder, animal cruelty and even accused of being snuff films. Why? Because most of them have really detailed special effects, while the rest tended to break some rules due to their indie budgets and subject matter.
But honestly, no one needs to be jailed for their art here. It’s just too enjoyable.
