First things first, as always with these posts, let’s talk about methodology.
GOBankingRates took data from DivorceWriter.com and Lawyers.com to figure out the average cost of divorce attorneys AND the filing fees. While many states charge a flat fee for filing, for states that do not, GOBankingRates just calculated an average. Also, all sorts of factors can inflate (or deflate) the average attorney costs, like shared children and property.
But none of these states are that cheap (and apparently, January is known as “divorce month” in the legal world? I had no idea, but I do know enough lawyers that I believe something so morbid and unofficial exists in their world).
