While hundreds of films have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, only six of them have been horror movies, according to an article on LADbible.
The first ever Best Picture nomination for a horror film was for 1974’s The Exorcist.
The nomination was the first horror film to be nominated since the Academy Awards had begun 50 years prior in 1929.
The film was also nominated in 10 other categories, “including Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.”
Ultimately, the film won the awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound Mixing.
