2015 started off horribly for Norma, a ninety-year-old Grandma from northern Michigan. Over the course of one week, she lost her husband of 67 years and also received news that she had a cancerous mass in her uterus. But when her doctors offered her the option of surgery, radiation, and chemo, Norma had other ideas. “I’m ninety years old. I’m hitting the road,” she told her doctors. Norma’s medical team completely understood the reasoning behind Norma’s decision. “As doctors, we see what cancer treatment looks like everyday. ICU, nursing homes, awful side effects and honestly, there is no guarantee she will survive the initial surgery to remove the mass,” one of her doctors said. “You are doing exactly what I would do in the same situation. Have a great trip!” he told her.
