Everyone tuning in to the Thanksgiving Primetime football game feasted their eyes on the first trailer for the Lion King remake, coming to theaters next summer. And it was a shot-for-shot remake of the original film’s opening sequence.
It’s interesting to see how far animation has come in the 24 years since the original release back in 1994, but I feel like they should have made this opening sequence, released it as a fun tribute for the 25th anniversary, and left it at that. Nobody asked for a full-length CGI version of the original with updated celebrity voices (including Seth Rogen, Beyoncé, and Donald Glover as Simba). The original is untouchable and too sacred to do this.
But that’s all we’re getting from Disney now: endless sequels and unnecessary CGI remakes of classics. Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson. A CGI remake of The Jungle Book. Toy Story… 4? We don’t need another Toy Story. You wrapped it all up perfectly. Give us something new.
I guess with Netflix robbing viewers from the theater, studios have to stick to their tried and true properties to win the war. Speaking of Netflix, I recommend the Coen Bros’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs if you want something fresh. Meanwhile, the fifth Spiderman in five years will be in theaters soon.
