Why the hate?

Many say while the acting and directing is better than ever, the writing has been subpar the last two seasons. A drop off in writing quality is understandable: the television series surpassed the books on which it is based back in season 7, leaving the author of the books, George R. R. Martin (who is known to write on the fly without so much as an outline to guide him), to just sort of guess how he’d envisioned it ending. Then it was up to showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to fill in the blanks. There is no denying the character arcs happen a lot faster since we’ve let Benioff and Weiss off the leash. Relationships and gradual changes of heart that would have previously spanned multiple seasons were all stuffed into the same hour. And “rushing things” was never a gripe until the show strayed from the meticulously detailed novels.

What’s more frustrating to fans who feel rushed, Benioff and Weiss stated it was their idea to wrap things up in eight seasons. HBO even pressed them to stretch it out over at least two more, but they declined. The showrunners say the shorter length is part of their creative vision, but behind the surface, they may have been pressured by actors (actors who may or may not be the ones criticizing the finale in the video above) eager to leave GOT for other projects. Perhaps Weiss and Benioff were eager to move on as well. After all, The duo is confirmed to be writing the ‘Star Wars’ flick releasing after ‘Rise of Skywalker’. Discussing the final season, George R.R. Martin told Rolling Stone, “I’m a little sad, actually. I wish we had a few more seasons. But I understand. Dave and Dan are gonna go on to do other things, and I’m sure some of the actors were signed up for like seven or eight years, and they would like to go on and take other roles. All of that is fair. I’m not angry or anything like that, but there’s a little wistfulness in me.”

Wrapping up any series in six episodes — let alone a series with as many threads as GOT — is an extremely tall order. According to some, too tall for Benioff and Weiss.

But hey, there’s still one left.
