Who is Le Zouave?
The most iconic part of Zig-Zag’s packaging is that bearded man on every label. Who the hell is he?
Well, he’s something of a legend. There’s a tale from the Battle of Sevastopol in 1879 about a French soldier, specifically, a class of light infantryman called a “Zouave.” The tale goes that he was attempting to smoke tobacco from a clay pipe when it was struck by a bullet. His solution to this problem was… Interesting.
He tore off a piece of paper from his bag of gunpowder and rolled the tobacco with that. The story spread around for years in France, and when you need a logo for rolling papers, Le Zouave makes perfect sense.
