The first time Mike Barker saw 10 veterans – all Purple Heart recipients – walk onto the baseball field and away from their struggles for a couple of hours, he knew he was witnessing something special.
Just a few months prior, those same 10 vets walked into the Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio, Texas where they would meet their new physical therapist, Mike, for the first time.
They had an instant understanding of each other, camaraderie born from a history of service. From 1999-2007, Mike served in the U.S. Army as a combat medic, deploying to Fallujah in 2004 at the highest point of conflict during the Iraq War.
