Snatch (2000) / Columbia Pictures
Snatch is one of my favourite movies ever. Let’s just get that out of the way right now. Not only is it hilarious, but it introduced me to a world that I had no idea existed: The world of Irish Travellers.
As a dude from Vancouver, I had absolutely no idea about anything related to these folks, but I was definitely intrigued.
When most people think of Irish Travellers, they picture what they’ve seen in highly dramatized television shows or headline-grabbing tabloids.
The reality on the ground is a complex mix of ancient heritage and sharp modern contrasts.
Irish Travellers, or Mincéirí, are an indigenous ethnic minority who have been an integral part of the Irish landscape for centuries.
Defined by a tight-knit family network, a private language, and distinct social customs, their insular lifestyle has preserved a unique piece of history, while also giving rise to some of Ireland’s most well-known cultural stereotypes.
If you’re interested, let’s take a little dive into the world of Mincéirí.
