While Star Trek did birth one of the internet’s most popular memes, it would be a shame to dismiss it the way I once did — as “that old space show that’s NOT Star Wars.”
The original series tackles some surprisingly deep philosophical themes, and for a show that debuted in the 1960s it has aged remarkably well.
But for all the reasons the sci-fi series deserves its praise, a greater deal of it is owed to one character: Spock. Half human, half Vulcan, Spock operates as the show’s moral compass — the logical and emotionally restrained counterweight to Kirk’s impulsive humanity.
All this leads to some quotes that hit deeper than Deep Space Nine.
