Happy Labor Day, ya’ll!
I hope you’re having a relaxing day off here at the tail end of summer, perhaps floating poolside or at the very least sipping on something tasty.
If you’ve ever wondered exactly why you happen to get the first Monday of September off every year, sit back, relax, and let me (do my best to) explain the somewhat murky — and deadly — origins of this particular federal holiday.
The origins of Labor Day date back all the way to the late 1880s. During that time, there were multiple groups of trade unionists who were choosing to celebrate their labor (with a well-deserved day off) on various days throughout the calendar year.
