Scientists have declared animals extinct before. Sometimes they were right. Other times, nature apparently forgot to check the paperwork.
From creatures that vanished from the fossil record to species that went decades without a confirmed sighting, these animals were officially presumed gone before someone eventually stumbled across one very much alive.
Some were found in remote forests. Others turned up in fishing nets, caves, museums, or places where scientists had absolutely no business expecting them.
