Probably the Best Site in the World
theCHIVE is a humor and lifestyle destination built on one stubborn idea: that the internet is better when it makes you laugh, makes you feel something, and occasionally makes you a better person before lunch. We’ve been at it since November 2008, and against all odds — and probably a little common sense — we’re still here.
We are a daily mix of funny photos, viral videos, mind-bending quizzes, gorgeous galleries, ridiculous stories, sports, military tributes, animal rescues, dad jokes, drone footage, dumpster fires, and the occasional life-changing moment. If you’ve been around the internet long enough, you’ve seen our work — even if you didn’t know where it came from.
The Content
What you’ll find on theCHIVE every day:
- Funny photos and videos, hand-curated and sourced from the wild corners of the web (and from you).
- DAR & DMA — our daily afternoon photo dump that’s been running since the beginning. Set your watch by it.
- Chive Charities stories making the world 10% Happier!
- High-res photography, drone shots, and travel galleries for the days you’d rather be anywhere else.
- Sports, gaming, tech, military, outdoor, and entertainment — because nobody is one thing.
- Stories about real people doing impossible things, especially the ones the rest of the internet missed.
We don’t chase outrage, we don’t farm misery, and we try very hard not to take ourselves seriously. If a post doesn’t earn a laugh, a “huh,” or a lump in the throat, it doesn’t belong here.
The Community: Chivers and Chivettes
theCHIVE wouldn’t exist without the people who show up every day, and over the years they gave themselves a name: Chivers (and Chivettes). They are, in their own words, a band of misfits from every walk of life — truck drivers and surgeons, soldiers and students, grandmothers and gamers — united by a shared sense of humor and an absurd capacity for kindness.
You can usually spot one in the wild. They’re the one wearing the “Keep Calm and Chive On“ (KCCO) shirt, or the Bill Murray tee, or carrying a KCCO koozie like it’s a passport. KCCO started as a joke, became a uniform, and somewhere along the way turned into a quiet handshake between strangers.
Chive Nation is what happens when an online community refuses to stay online. Chivers run their own meetups, Chive Chapters, and unofficial get-togethers in cities all over the world — from Chicago to Cape Town, Dublin to Auckland. They show up to drink beer, swap stories, raise money for local causes, and prove that the internet is still, occasionally, a place where good things happen between actual humans.
Our motto says it best: Chive On. It’s two words that mean roughly: keep going, look out for each other, and don’t let the bastards grind you down.
Chive Charities
In 2010 we started Chive Charities, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that exists for one reason: to help people, veterans, and families the rest of the world tends to overlook — those facing rare medical conditions, life-altering injuries, and the kind of bills no GoFundMe should have to cover.
We thought we’d raise a few thousand dollars and call it a good day. Chivers had different plans. Together, this community has raised tens of millions of dollars, granted hundreds of life-changing wishes, and turned a humor site into one of the more unlikely philanthropic engines on the internet.
100% of every dollar donated to a specific recipient goes to that recipient. That’s the deal. That’s always been the deal.
The Founders: John and Leo Resig
theCHIVE was started by two brothers from Fort Wayne, Indiana — John Resig and Leo Resig — with no money, no investors, no plan worth printing, and a small house in Venice Beach full of equally broke roomates. Before theCHIVE, they ran a celebrity gossip blog called Derober.com (RIP Derober). The pivot came when they realized they’d rather make people laugh than make people angry. They are still very proud about the time when they fooled the world into thinking Donald Trump tipped a waiter $10,000!
The early years were powered almost entirely by viral pranks, fun hoaxes, and the kind of stunts that occasionally fooled major news networks. When the company nearly went under, the audience saved it — buying out a small batch of t-shirts in minutes, then another batch, then another. That moment built the bond between theCHIVE and the Chivers, and it’s still the bond we operate on today.
John serves as the public face and longtime President of theCHIVE — the guy who writes the late-night charity posts and signs them “KCCO, John n’ Leo.” Leo built the business side of Chive Media Group and is still the CEO today. John and Leo describe theCHIVE as a sandbox to try cool new ideas with their fanbase and see what sticks! They have gone on to co-found other ventures, including the streaming TV channel CHIVE TV which they rolled into a venture backed company called Atmosphere TV and they founded William Murray Golf with actors Bill Murray and Joel Murray and their long-time friend and partner Brandon Barrett.
The company moved from Los Angeles to Austin, Texas in 2013, where theCHIVE is still headquartered today.
