Milla Jovovich almost wasn’t cast as Leeloo.
When Milla Jovovich auditioned for the role of quirky carrot-top/supreme being, Leeloo, The Fifth Element writer/director Luc Besson thought Jovovich was “overdressed and over made-up and very, very, nervous.”
Besson moved on and auditioned hundreds actresses (including Elizabeth Berkley, who almost nabbed the role), but after running into a bare-faced Jovovich at a hotel pool, Besson invited the pro model/newbie actor to try for Leeloo again.
Jovovich nailed the audition, “dancing with no rhythm, singing, speaking in gibberish,” and landed the part.
