45 Years Later and Stanley Kubrick’s Masterpiece Shines On
Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror film The Shining was released 45 years ago today. Kubrick was born in the Bronx but would eventually settle in England. His adaptation of Stephen King’s novel would be released in the U.K. on November 7th, 1980.
The movie would bring in over $47 million worldwide, against a budget of $19 million. And although King infamously disliked Kubrick’s version, the film has become a staple in the genre. Some have called it the greatest horror movie of all time.
45 years later, and The Shining remains an important film for many reasons. It’s psychological horror done the right way. Kubrick’s technical skills are very much on display. And it’s easily one of Jack Nicholson’s best performances. Enjoy this trip back to the Overlook!
