Remember in The Lion King when Simba fed Nala his ol’ hakuna matata?
And it didn’t really make sense to the plot, along with the obvious fact that a movie intended for children doesn’t need to have a scene of lions getting it on.
Sometimes, sex scenes are completely unnecessary.
But sometimes, sex scenes are very very necessary and even do some narrative heavy lifting.
You know, sex scenes that help to move the story forward, reveal character, or raise the stakes.
This is not a list of gratuitous nonsense. It’s a list of movie sex scenes that earned their screen time. The ones that mattered, did real narrative work, and are 100% necessary.

Boogie Nights (1997)
Sex isn’t just part of Boogie Nights… it’s the engine.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1970s-set classic is built entirely around the porn industry and the people chasing fame inside it.
In the film’s pivotal early scene, Dirk Diggler (then still Eddie Adams) films his first explicit scene opposite Amber Waves (Julianne Moore).
That moment marks his official entry (literally) into the business and kicks off his rapid rise as a porn star, along with all the excess, ego, and consequences that follow.
