“Beau Is Afraid” Review: A nightmare odyssey comedy (9 GIFs)
Beau Is Afraid is the newest film by Ari Aster, the director of Hereditary and Midsommar. That one fact alone needs to be said up top, as Aster is far from a universal director. I’m certainly one of his fans, but Hereditary and Midsommar have managed to confront audiences in completely different ways.
Even if both are known and accepted for having great lead performances (Toni Collette for Hereditary, Florence Pugh for Midsommar), they are the rare emotionally and physically brutal works of filmmaking to actually receive relatively wide releases in theaters in the past few years, not so much touching on taboos and shocking human behavior as much as smashing them directly into the center of your skull, sometimes with a comically-sized mallet or power line pole.
