Five Minutes in the Criterion Closet Could Save Your Soul (35 Photos)
Take a break from the doomed Netflix hour-long scroll and dive into the world of praised cine with a look at the films featured in the Criterion Collection.
The Criterion Closet is a long running video series produced by the Criterion Collection, a boutique physical movie label that is renowned for restoring and releasing classic and contemporary films in their most definitive versions.
The premise is simple: filmmakers, actors, writers, and artists are invited into the company’s “closet” where there are over 1500 titles stacked wall to wall. They are then asked to pick out a stack of films to take home. In doing so, the guests reveal not only their cinematic influences but also the deeply personal relationships they have with movies.
This can get sappy, this can get a tad pretentious (we love it though), this can get funny, and it can get heartfelt, but most of all – it can be super inspiring to hear stories about how these artists found their inspiration and dreams.
If you love obscure cinema and classic films of the 20th century, these short, 5-9 minute videos will teach you about the world of cinema, a lot of independent cinema, famous directors firsts, culturally relevant artists that pushed boundaries, great stories from each and every participant, and lots of movies that you have probably, most-likely, never heard of.
