42 years ago today Ghostbusters hit theaters and honestly, it’s a miracle the movie ever came out at all.
Director Ivan Reitman was handed an absolute nightmare of a deadline: he had just 12 months to make the entire film, including hundreds of complex special effects.
There wasn’t even a visual effects studio capable of handling the work on that timeline, so they had to literally build a brand-new effects company from scratch just to hit the summer release window.
Against all odds, they pulled off some of the most iconic, impressive practical effects in cinema history.
