Grandma’s Boy Turns 20!
20th Century Fox
Twenty years later, Grandma’s Boy still feels like a weird little time capsule that somehow aged better than expected.
A nerdy, video game centered stoner-comedy that was considered a huge flop when it first landed in theatres January 6th, 2006!
What was unexpected from the indie comedy was the enormous success it was destined to find from DVD sales. It became a staple film for the gaming community to watch. It went perfectly with a bag of your favourite Cool Ranch Doritos and some Mountain Dew, maybe a bit of the ol’ chronic to go with!
What made the film stand out was its surprisingly accurate depiction of the gaming culture for the modern age – including an inside look at the gaming studio environment. Having real consoles on the screen, like Xbox, and a familiar lingo like the old pinball heads had. It was nice to see video games done for real.
NOT TO MENTION.. It’s super-dirty, unapolegetic mid 2000’s humour, crude and endlessly quotable. The Sandler-produced film stars his usual supporting cast favourites like Allen Covert, Nick Swardson, Peter Dante, and Linda Cardellini – and a very early performance by Jonah Hill.
Yet another reason why we need to keep the physical releases going. Some movies can find their audiences much later. I don’t think any of those who worked on it would imagine that they’d still be talking about 20 years later.
Check out the trailer, a couple clips, and some fun trivia from the movie!
