We have St. Patrick’s Day on the brain right now, and it inspired me to curate a list of films made by Irish directors or have Ireland as their subject matter that I genuinely believe people should check out.
But there’s a bit of a caveat with that.
You see, something that became very clear to me as I put this list together is that most films by the Irish or about Ireland are fucking wildly depressing. That doesn’t mean that every movie on this list will drive you to tears, but what it does mean is that I encourage pouring yourself a glass of hard Irish whiskey before dealing with a few of these movies. The title of this post isn’t as much of a joke as it is a strong recommendation.
(Or don’t drink because several of these movies heavily feature alcoholics, what else did you expect?)
