Hollywood has always had a complicated relationship with the phrase “we can probably make this work.”
Give a filmmaker enough money, a wildly unreasonable deadline and an actor willing to suffer for their art, and suddenly somebody is building an entire fake city in the desert, filming in temperatures that should legally qualify as an emergency, or asking an actor to perform a stunt that would make a normal human immediately contact their insurance company.
These productions didn’t just make movies. They went through things to make movies.
Actors transformed their bodies, crews endured ridiculous conditions, directors demanded borderline insane practical effects, and studios occasionally discovered that the laws of physics were apparently just suggestions.
