Shrek is, somehow, 25 years old today.
A box office smash hit when it came out in the spring of 2001, it seems as though the big green ogre hasn’t faded at all from the cultural zeitgeist in the two and a half decades since.
Even today, you can catch reruns of Shrek and its sequels and independent theaters, dance your asses off at Shrek raves, or even tie the knot at a Shrek-themed wedding.
There’s a reason why this fantasy comedy has some serious staying power, due largely in part that it is a great watch for kids and adults alike.
Now that those who were kids back in 2001 and are now, begrudgingly, adults, we can rewatch Shrek with a new perspective, and pick up on some things that may have gone over our short-statured heads back in the day.
Here are a few of my personal favorite adult gags that helped make Shrek the masterpiece that it is.
